3. Rural Farm Waste Management

IISD in association with NABARD implemented one major programme in 50 villages of Kakori Block, Lucknow District on farm waste management. During this programme farmers were trained to manage their farm waste and convert it into useful compost which could be used in their fields. This was a successful programme as at the end of the programme 30 youths started their own vermi-composting units to produce organic compost out of farm waste.

4. Waste Management Model in Lucknow City

IISD in collaboration with Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi worked on waste management problem of Lucknow city and came out with one innovative and successful model to answer the ever increasing problem of the city. As it is known that Lucknow Municipal Corporation provides waste collection service to the residents. But in many areas this service is not being provided due to lack of staff. Considering this IISD employed 50 rag pickers who were provided with rickshaw-trolly to collect the waste door-to-door in un-served colonies. The waste was sorted at the source and all bio-degradable waste was converted into compost which was again sold to the residents and other non degradable waste was collected and thrown at the waste dumping sites of LMC. The collectors charge Rs. 30/- per family for this service. Through this, new permanent avenues were generated toward employment for the unemployed youths side-by-side promotion of cleanliness was done and residents also came to know about the segregation of waste at the source.

It was in the year 2000 when we started this programme for 2 years and now we believe that more than 150 persons are engage in waste collection in colonies where LMC is not providing the service. So the model initiated was very successful and was adopted by more and more people.

5. Science Clubs in Schools

IISD in collaboration with Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi initiated science clubs in 50 schools of Lucknow, Barabanki and Unnao districts. In these science clubs students are trained to manage their domestic waste, convert it into vermi-compost for their garden and manage waste as well as rain water in their schools and colonies. Some demonstration models had been established in schools so that large number of students could be made aware of these practices.
